During the evening rush hour of August 1, 2007, a bridge supporting one of the busiest freeways in Minnesota unexpectedly collapsed, taking the lives of 13 people and injuring 145 more.1 To many leaders at the time, the Interstate 35W bridge disaster served as a wake-up call to the country's deteriorating infrastructure. More than $100 million was ultimately paid out by the state and two contractors to survivors and families of the dead. Infrastructure Preservation Corporation (IPC) has an answer to this catastrophic problem in the form of new geophysical nondestructive inspection technology, leveraged through robotic systems.

Looking back over the last 50 years, such loss of life is not all that uncommon.2 In 1980, 35 people died when a freighter rammed one of the support columns of Tampa Bay's Sunshine Skyway Bridge. In 1967, 32 vehicles plunged into the freezing Ohio River when the Silver Bridge between Point Pleasant, WV and Gallipolis, OH collapsed, taking the lives of 46 people"a 0.1-inch defect in a metal bar was indicated to be at fault.

Out of approximately 612,000 bridges in existence in the U.S., more than 55,000 of them are in need of repair3"and Americans cross these endangered structures 185 million times per day.

New solutions, such as that developed by IPC, points the way to saving countless lives"as well as billions in repairs"by isolating structural faults before they become serious issues.4 Robotic systems leverage geophysical nondestructive technology (NDT) protocols to, in effect, x-ray concrete and other infrastructure to identify early-stage deterioration, enabling recommendation of repairs before deterioration spreads and compromises the structure's ability to carry its design loads. Proper diagnosis allows planning and repair of early-stage deterioration, which is also financially preferable, in that it prolongs infrastructure service life expectancy.

"Traditional infrastructure inspection methods are over 50 years old and are thus quite outdated," said Doug Thaler, president of IPC. "They are manual in nature and often deliver subjective results. There are new solutions that provide quantitative data, allowing departments of transportation (DOTs) to better allocate existing maintenance budgets."

IPC's solutions, now patented or in patent pending status, constitute the first commercially viable robotic inspection methods in the industry. These technologies produce modern archived, quantitative inspection data that can help infrastructure asset managers to better manage preservation and extension of service life of critical infrastructure assets. The foundation of what makes something humorous causes humor to be a challenge for those of us who are hard of hearing. Here is why.
ELEMENT OF SURPRISE: Humor is based on the element of SURPRISE. Because the topic and content of the conversation are part of the many dynamics that enable us to comprehend speech, the surprise twists and turns in humor are often lost on us with hearing loss.

FAST TALKING/DELIVERY: Another challenge with humor is that so many stand-up comics talk real fast. I appreciate the closed-captioning of the comedy specials, but more often than not the words fly off the screen before I even begin to read them.

WAYS TO MINIMIZE THE AWKWARDNESS OF HUMOR:

If it is YOU that has a hearing loss: If you miss the punch line you can save yourself a lot of embarrassment by not pretending you got it and laughing. Why? You'd be surprised how many "normal hearing" folks didn't hear that punch line either. If you are laughing, someone can tap you on the shoulder and ask you to tell them what was said. Then you have to fess up that you were faking it. Not a comfortable. I can't tell you how many times that have happened to me.

If WITH SOMEONE who has a hearing loss: If someone cracks a joke, and you didnt catch the punch line, but your hearing impaired friend or family member is laughing, PLEASE, PLEASE do not turnaround and ask them what was said. Many of us with hearing loss fake laughing just to fit in. To ask us to repeat what was said is asking us to confess we didnt hear and are faking it. Excruciating uncomfortable. Ask someone else.

If someone cracks a joke and your hearing impaired family or friend is NOT laughing, dont make a big deal about it. What I have found is that if someone insists I hear and proceeds to explain what I missed to me, the flow of the group dynamics comes to a screeching halt. I just *abhor* that. All that attention focused on me, waiting for me to get it and then laugh. Even if what is explained is funny, I usually find it hard to laugh because Im so uncomfortable with the fact the flow of the fun has been interrupted because of me.

BE AWARE. BE SENSITIVE. BE RESPECTFUL

Hearing loss comes with a host of challenges. Among those challenges is the awkwardness of not hearing, not wanting to bring attention to the fact we don't hear, yet still wanting to fit it. Humor, probably more than any other social setting, puts us in that uncomfortable place. If you have a loss, you might clarify with family and friends how you want the fact that you obviously didn't hear something handled. If with a family member or friend who has a hearing loss, ask how they would like to handle their hearing impairment in a social gathering or while watching a TV show. Do they want you to make sure they hear everything? Or would they rather stay incognito? For me, I choose the latter every time. If I want to know what was funny, Ill ask. Otherwise, Id rather be left alone. This request to not make me hear everything was, at first, very uncomfortable for my husband. He loves me and wants me to participate fully in everything. That is why he wrestled for three hours with Best Buy sales people to uncover what the mystery is getting the Netflix closed-captioning to work on a Blu-ray player. But through the years he has learned to not insist that I hear everything. On rare occasions, however, something is just TOO good to miss, and he knows I would really enjoy it. In those situations, he is right, and I am grateful he made that effort for me to get it.

If during inquiry you receive a defensive response, don't press the issue. Allow them to handle not hearing in the way that is most comfortable for them. If you notice OTHERS pressing the issue with your hearing impaired family or friend, you may want to lovingly pull them aside and explain the kinder, gentler approach.

Cloud computing, a type of computing that relies on sharing computing resources rather than local servers to manage applications is an on-demand service model for IT provisioning and is based on virtualization and distributed computing technologies. Cloud computing has radically changed software development and the way enterprises use data and information. It has become a mainstay of the current IT landscape, with the market research firm, IHS, predicting that 142 billion will be spent by enterprises globally on infrastructure and cloud-related services by 2017.

Most of todays enterprise applications, such as SAP ERP, Oracle database apps, and Microsoft Exchange, which reside in data centers come under the traditional scale-up category. The workloads are generally client-server or n-tier applications that run on a single server or a group of servers and databases. To scale-up traditional apps, the preferred method is typically to increase the size of the application and database infrastructure, and therefore, the ability to scale-up for traditional apps is somewhat limited by the workload architecture. The new generation of apps generally associated with cloud computing, such as gaming and mobile apps,Big Data, and social apps, fall into the cloud-native scale-out application workloads category. These workload types require a substantial amount of dynamic scaling and elasticitythat would be very expensive or even impossible to achieve with traditional datacenter architectures.

With the development of cloud computing, computing power began to be provided by multiple commodity grade computing, networking and storage nodes rather than increasingly larger and more expensive servers. The load generated by millions of users is cost-effectively handled by internet companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon by running multiple application servers in parallel, utilizing significant caching methods, and replicating data to numerous traditional or distributed database servers. Traditional scale-up and cloud-native scale-out application workloads have many other differences in addition to those stated above and a company looking to deploy a cloud solution has to seriously consider the two options to determine the solution that best fits its needs.A relatively new cloud offering, Citrixs Cloud Platform offering, which is powered by Apache Cloud Stack, is an application-centric cloud that could indeed be used for both traditional scale-up and cloud-native scale-out application workloads would certainly be valuable considering future growth and expansion.

Providing private, secure access to corporate resources from any location can be critical to an enterprises operations. The flexibility to increase bandwidth when necessary should also be considered when choosing a cloud solution. Companies that require an adequate bandwidth at all times without having to pay for idle capacity should consider on-demand, burstable bandwidth models.

Cloud computing is still developing and will continue to evolve. Further, the needs of a company change constantly, and therefore, there is no one single correct cloud solution - each has its pros and cons. Fixing Wii problems of this type is usually resolved by unplugging the console and allowing it to set for a few minutes. Plug it back in. If it works, you're good to go. If this is not effective, you may need to have the systems professionally serviced.

Wii Remote Problems

While error codes and disc errors are common, they are not the only problems that can arise. Wii users often can be heard complaining about the Wii remote. * Make sure the sensor bar is properly inserted and tightly secured to the back area of the Wii.
* Place the sensor bar where you indicated it should be located during Wii setup, either above or below your TV.
* Change batteries. When the remote's batteries are low, you may encounter problems even though the remote indicates that batteries are low.
* Other signal generators such as cordless keyboards and wireless telephones can cause the Wii remote to operate improperly.
* Make sure that you are between three feet and ten feet from the console when using the remote, to ensure optimum operation.
* Remove any obstruction that is between the Wii console, the sensor bar, and the Wii remote.
* Infra-red light sources can also cause the remote to operate improperly. Don't use it in sunlight, near a candle, or near a fireplace, which are infra-red sources.

Advancements in MEMS manufacturing, like many technological markets, is greatly driven by size, cost, and performance. Implementing SOI wafer solutions in the MEMS fabrication process allows production of smaller devices, cheaper costs and higher device performance. Let's take a look at how SOI wafers are created and how they are advancing MEMS manufacturing.

The main draw to SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator) wafer technology is that it features an electrically insulating layer to protect the micro device. They are created using three layers of material. The first layer is the device layer; thin layers of high-quality silicon where the transistors are formed. The second layer is the insulating layer called the BOX (buried oxide) which is usually made out of silicon dioxide. This layer keeps the transistors isolated from the third layer, the handle layer. The handle layer is made of bulk silicone and provides structural support to the device. SOI wafers can be either thick film or thin film, depending on the application.

SMALLER DEVICES

The first advantage SOI solutions have over bulk silicone wafers is that they allow for creation of smaller devices. The wafer manufacturing process makes the transistors more efficient, allowing for the production of more compact chips and greater chip yield per wafer because the chips can actually be placed closer together.

As consumer technology becomes more compact, MEMS companies strive to develop chips that hold more information in a much smaller space. So, in the MEMs world SOI wafer applications are pretty cool, because not only do they allow for smaller designs, they allow for more flexible designs with greater potential.

CHEAPER COSTS

While the initial cost of is more expensive than bulk silicone wafers, the additional features available with SOI actually create lower manufacturing costs for a better, more advanced product. For instance, SOI wafers with pre-etched cavities are available and they simplify the MEMS manufacturing process by lowering development time. SOI wafers also allow production of higher quality chips without the need to purchase and implement more expensive manufacturing equipment.

With an increasing number of MEMS foundries adopting SOI technology and manufacturing processes as a standard, the prices of these wafers have decreased substantially and continue to decrease.

BETTER PERFORMANCE

The final selling point for SOI is that it offers a solution to create superior products. The insulating BOX layer reduces electrical current leakage, which in turn reduces unnecessary power consumption and gives the transistor better performance. It also reduces heat, allowing for these MEMS devices to be used in higher-temperature environments with no ill effects.

The insulating layer also blocks out signal noise which not only allows the transistors' switching speeds to increase, but also results in a more precise product.

As you can see, SOI wafers are advancing MEMS manufacturing in a big way. Many engineering companies as well as Universities use SOI wafers for research, development and testing.
